First Taste of Monster’s New Soda

Monster has a new soda, and to advertise that they’ve been handing out free bottles to students. The sodas, named Mutant, come in a handful of flavors.

Hands-On

It bills itself as a “super soda”, saying on the label that “there’s nothing soft about this drink.” (It’s still soft, ie. non-alcoholic).

I tried the “classic” yellow flavor. It looks and tastes very much like Mountain Dew, a soda whose taste I’m not a fan of. Mutant has a slightly stronger aftertaste compared to Mountain Dew.

As far as being a competitor, it fits. The Monster brand is pretty popular on campus, as is Red Bull, and could be more popular if the campus didn’t have a monopolistic agreement with Pepsi Co.

It’s good to see some competition to the Coke / Pepsi duopoly, although Mountain Dew isn’t necessarily the drink I’d compete with.

Freshman year of college, I pulled an all-nighter studying for a chemistry final. The teacher was cool and the class was fun, but we didn’t actually learn anything. With a book and my notes, I went through every chapter and did all the sample problems. I had a large pizza from Pizza Hut and two liters of Mountain Dew.

By the morning, I ended up drinking another half liter and crashed. Unfortunately my exam was in the afternoon. So I begrudgingly did it and passed out for the rest of the day, feeling ill because of how much soda I drank. Since that day, I have never drank Mountain Dew, nor have I wanted to. I passed the exam.

The drink has 115mg of caffeine and 70g of sugar. It does not contain any mice.
